Papua New Guinea’s three-on-three basketball teams are into the semifinals today after winning their respective matches in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu.
Team manager Kevin Teme said men’s team finished top after their pool competition despite losing to the Solomon Islands 13-11 yesterday in their last pool match.
PNG and Solomon Islands will meet in the first semifinal while Fiji take on Samoa in other semifinal.
The winners of the semifinals will advance to gold medal play off today.
The men’s team finished on top after the round robin games and will play fourth-placed Solomon Islands in the semifinal.
Teme said PNG finished second in the women’s competition and will play third-placed Vanuatu team while the top team, Cook Islands, will take on Nauru in other semifinal.
Cook Island is the only team that defeated PNG and coach Moi Muri will have to polish up the team before the finals today.
Teme said he was confident that his teams would do their best in the semifinals.
“We take one game at the time so our focus will be on the semi-finals and it will be a bonus to play in the gold medal play-off,” he said.
Teme said the only problem was that the team has three players and no reserve but they managed to pull through.
