PAPUA New Guinea Amoa beach volleyball pair Moha Mea and Richard Kilarupa bagged two bronze medals, beating Fiji at the Oceania Beach Volleyball Championship and Central Zonal finals last week.
The PNG pair, last year’s Pacific Games gold medallists went down to Australia in the Fiji Open Beach Volleyball Championship at the Smugglers Inn, Cove Beach, volleyball courts.
Mea and Kilarupa were outplayed but the Australian’s technical nous and fitness but they had also contributed to their downfall with a high error count.
They were beaten by a fitter and skilful Aussie pair, who had the class and experience in the two events.
The women’s pair of Alice Ito and Mera Kilarupa also performed well despite a lack of preparation time, winning bronze and ending fourth overall in both tournaments.
Amoa coach Pukari Tore said despite the limited training time for the teams before departure for the tournament, they put up exceptional performances against much fitter and skilful teams from Australia and other Pacific countries.
Tore said it was an excellent opportunity to play the Aussies to gain good experience and exposure at that level.
“These are good results for our teams in the lead-up to next year’s events,” Tore said.
“We thank the PNG Olympic Committee for the financial backing to attend the championships.”
