THE Guo section of the Highlands Highway will be completely closed down for heavy trucks as construction company Kaiaworks Limited carries out massive excavation work to clear out sliding landslide debris for the next two days.
Contractor Kaiaworks Ltd issued a notice yesterday, advising trucking companies not use the Guo section until Saturday when restoration work is expected to be completed.
The company’s managing director, Godfrid Umba, said continuous rain worsened the condition of the road, it needed to be closed down to traffic to enable them to do a complete repair.
“The Guo section is temporarily closed at 1pm yesterday (Wednesday) until Saturday (March 18) for major excavation works over the existing bypass,” Umba said.
“Light traffic and PMVs will be allowed access on a scheduled arrangement, all Heavy Trucks will not be allowed until after Saturday.”
Chimbu Administrator Joe Kunda had said earlie that following continuous heavy rain had forced mud slips to flow downward affecting the recently repaired section.
“Guo is now becoming a very difficult section to manage, local contractor Kaiaworks is doing its best to fix the road but the bad weather is making it very difficult,” Kunda said.
He said heavy trucks could not pass through as it would be difficult to get out if they got stuck in the muddy section.
Trucks bound for Jiwaka, Western Highlands, Enga, Porgera Gold Mine, Southern Highlands and Hela were left stranded in Kundiawa since Monday while those bound for Lae sea-port were stranded in Minj (Jiwaka) and Mt Hagen.
