A NEW learning centre at Buala village in the Ahi Local Level Government in Lae has been given K20,000 by the Lae Biscuit Company to help in uits operation.
The JBA Memorial Learning Centre was set up in February by husband and wife Willard and Nancy Bogan Ahi. It was named after Ahi’s late father Joseph Bogan Ahi.
Around 200 children are enrolled there. Nancy is the principal and is supported by 12 teaching staff.
Willard Ahi told The National that they had planned to use the centre to educate adults who wanted to read and write.
But he said the parents wanted their children to be educated there instead.
“The parents without our knowledge brought in the children for school on the opening day. And that was how the centre started,” Ahi said.
He approached the Lae Biscuit Company to assist in providing resources such as
books but it provided the cash instead.
