Buai ban failure a black mark on Parkop

Letters

THE ill-conceived buai ban policy introduced by NCD Governor Powes Parkop has been a dismal failure.
The ban and its enforcement had inflicted so much pain and suffering on NCD residents.
Had Parkop foreseen the adverse outcomes of his policy he would have designed and approached the matter differently.
But now he has to live with the disastrous consequences of his political blunder.
Enforcement of buai ban has directly resulted in the deaths of over 30 citizens in NCD and Central Province.
Some were shot dead at Hanuabada village and on the streets of Port Moresby by city rangers enforcing the ban.  Others have drowned on the seas between Central Province and NCD while ferrying the banned commodity.
Some were swept away by the fast flowing Laloki River.
Even a few were killed by venomous snakes while trekking the treacherous snake infested jungles and marsh lands of Central Province to evade the enforcers.
Parkop has now reneged on his policy and allowed buai to be
sold again on the streets of Port Moresby.
What could be the motive for his sudden change of heart on the eve of election?
If it is to appease the voters in NCD hoping to win back the support he had lost then he has miscalculated big time.
No amount of political gimmicks will make restitution for the loss of human lives and sufferings Parkop has inflicted on individuals and families.
