A NEW Buk bilong Pikinini library was opened at the Kulanda Primary School in Tari, Hela, yesterday.
BbP founder Ann Sophie Hermann said the programme was about preparing children for school and supporting children in their education.
“It’s so important to get children reading from a very young age because about 85 per cent of the growth of the brain and development happens in those first five years. That is why we need to see more (children) reading,” she said.
“It will influence the lifelong capacity of children to read and to learn. Children coming to our after-school programme are supported with access books and literacy materials.”
BbP has 17 libraries in the country. They lend out an average of 3000 books a month and provide a simulative learning environment for children.
The library was built with funding from the Oil Search Foundation in partnership with the Catholic Diocese, Hela government and Buk bilong Pikinini.
