Businesses mourn passing of Sir Michael Curtain

THE business community has expressed their sadness at the passing away of Curtain Bros founder and managing director Sir Michael Curtain (picrtured).
Business Council Papua New Guinea president David Toua said Sir Michael had contributed significantly to the development of business in PNG which was better off now because of him.
He extended the condolences of the council executives and members to the family.
“He epitomised a visionary businessman who saw a prosperous and modern Papua New Guinea,” he said.
“For 50 years, he shaped and built the infrastructure landscape. From the Poreporena Freeway to the Motukea Island port project, his leadership in these ventures has vastly improved economic opportunities for our people.
“Sir Mick was also a keen advocate of workforce growth. He was in progressive discussions with public and private entities to establish a training facility to cater for the large demand of skilled workers in the construction sector.
“He shared the view that a hallmark of nation building was a vibrant workforce built by business and Government.
“He was also passionate about the Australia-PNG relationship and had strong belief that collaboration will deliver world-class projects.
“This was exactly what occurred when his company worked with enterprises from Australia to complete the construction phase of the PNG LNG project.
“We are thankful for his vast contribution and commitment to the development of business in Papua New Guinea.”
Australian-PNG Business Council president Greg Pawson said: “Sir Michael Curtain was one of the most successful Australian business people in PNG since its independence.  His achievements will stand for generations to come as making a significant contribution to Papua New Guinea’s economic development”.
