Call for accountability in conducting affairs

The United States embassy is calling for more accountability in running the affairs of the country.
US Ambassador Catherine Ebert-Gray in her address to the 2017 PNG Update Forum at the University of PNG last Wednesday, said everyone has a responsibility to hold each other accountable for decisions made.
“(There must be) accountability in governance, resource management, health care and for positively impacting the lives of Papua New Guineans.
“It is up to the people of this nation, including each of us and the media, to hold each other accountable and to promote decisions to benefit everyone,” Ebert-Gray said.
She said with commitment and strong governance of PNG institutions, the US was encouraged by the long-term future of PNG.
“We are encouraged by the call for accountable leadership during this year’s elections and the growth of civil society focused on the environment, human rights and good governance.”
She has urged the newly elected representatives to exemplify good leadership.
Ebert-Gray also acknowledged the new levels of respect for women emerging in many professions in Papua New Guinea.
“We must continue to support women in all levels of society,” she said.
“And most importantly by investing in young people, equally investing in males and females to ensure that their intelligence, energy and passion for improving their country is channeled to support an accountable democracy and successful future for all Papua New Guineans,” Ebert-Gray said.
