Call to help flood-affected village

AUTHORITIES are being called on to respond immediately to the flood-affected people at Gabensis village in the Wampar local level government area of Huon Gulf, Morobe, after their village was destroyed two weeks ago.
Ward Three councillor Francis Paul yesterday said people were in serious need of support from the government and stakeholders to help them rebuild their lives.
Paul said his people were camping at a care centre at Gabensis Primary School for the past two weeks since their village was flooded by the Gabensis River on July 30 following heavy rain.
Asked if authorities had responded to them, Paul said since then different government agencies had filed reports but to date, nothing significant had happened.
“Many permanent and temporary houses and  food gardens and cash crops were destroyed by the flood,” Paul said
“Some houses stood where the river bed is right now.”
Gabensis Elementary School, which has more than 200 children, had its bush-material building washed away and the permanent building had its walls torn apart by debris.
