Call to restore recreational areas

ACTING Morobe administration Sheila Harou is calling for a restoration of war memorial parks and other public recreational areas in Lae city.
Harou said some of those public parks have not been maintained over the years and this has diminished their importance today.
She said in the past people used these areas for recreational purposes and also war relics were kept there for visitors to see.
She said at the moment the Amelia Earhart Park in downtown Lae, for example, was been overgrown with shrubs and no one is taking responsibility to maintain it.
“The park has been long abandoned unlike before when it was used as public park for people to enjoy,” said Harou
She said the Remembrance Day celebrations on July 23 were supposed to have been staged there but were moved to the botanical garden because of some unsettled issues. There are also other sites in the city which need to be properly kept for the public to enjoy during family gatherings and other recreational activities.
Harou said that one of the main challenges for the provincial government and its stakeholders now was to restore these places as well as other parks and gardens in the city. Meanwhile, Harou has called on all MPs-elect for Morobe not to get involved with the province’s affairs until after they have been officially sworn in and signed contracts.
