Call to review building regulations

THE National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology has urged the Works Ministry to review the current building regulation as it is not in alignment with the PNG Building Code (PNG standard).
Institute director-general Victor Gabi said in a statement yesterday, while supporting the call by Works Minister Francis Awesa for the demolition of all sub-standard buildings around the country.
He said the building regulations when reviewed should mandate the various standards that come under the code.
Gabi said it was obvious that municipal authorities such as the NCD, Lae City Authority and others around the country did not have effective monitoring and evaluation programmes, which reflected alignment in the building inspection programmes deployed in their jurisdictions.
He said there were many residential developments in the city which did not comply with the PNG building standards set by the National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology.
“A properly revised building regulation with tougher penalties for non-compliance is something that the Works Department must work on to take control of the infrastructure in PNG,” Gabi said.
“Once the building regulation is revised, policing the PNG building code (standard) becomes the only code for buildings.”
