JOSEPH Baeau, the chairman of the Vane Mata Incorporated Land Group in Hiri district, Central, thanked Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and the members of Parliament for doing away with the scheme.
Parliament abolished sustainable agriculture business lease (SABL) following the recommendations by a Commission of Inquiry which concluded that land under SABL were obtained illegally. Baeau said the SABL scheme had marginalised legitimate landowners.
“The decision to abolish SABLs is a victory for the small people who are the legitimate landowners.”
Baeau said several court proceedings were taken against developers who obtained land under SABL because land portions were grabbed illegally.
