The little-known Toe Kwarali Canoe Racing Association of Moapa village on the Aroma coast, Central, will host its final race at Maopa beach today.
The association’s treasurer Lewana Enara said over 200 canoes will take part in the 20-course race along the Aroma coast.
The association hosted 80 canoe races this season with the backing of Abau MP and Public Service Minister Sir Puka Temu and this weekend’s races will be the final.
Enara said canoe races were divided in four categories: course, speed, middle race and curtain.
The K50,000 received from Sir Puka was spread to cover the cash prizes for the four different categories.
The winner in the speed category will pick up K500 and trophies.
There will be 20 different prizes for 20 finishers.
Similar prizes are on offer for middle course and curtain categories.
The main event, the course, will see the winner walking away with K1000 and the Puka Temu Cup.
Enara extended his gratitude to the MP for his continued support of the traditional sport of canoe racing in his electorate.
