Catholic Church celebrates 50 years

OVER 130,000 members of the Catholic Church in Madang are celebrating the golden jubilee of the church’s dioceses and the Year of Mercy, respectively.
Madang’s Archbishop Stephen Reichert said Catholics around the country were celebrating the 50 years of their existence as dioceses after Pope John Paul V1 declared Madang and other provinces in the country as dioceses on Nov 15, 1966.
Reichert said they also joined members of the church around the world to celebrate the Year of Mercy that was established by Pope Francis.
He said the jubilee on celebrating the 50 years of mercy was to remind members of the Catholic congregations around the world of the mercy God had for them to send his son Jesus Christ to redeem them from sin.
“Therefore, we also must have mercy, compassion, forgiveness and love towards others,” Reichert said.
Over 10 representatives from the 29 parishes in the province and other members of the church in town convoyed from Alexishafen (where the first Catholic missionaries set foot) outside town to the Catholic cathedral last Wednesday.
“Our roots were in Alexishafen,” Reichert said.
