THE Waigani Committal Court has dismissed charges against four University of PNG students accused of unlawfully using a motor vehicle.
Brendan Kisa, Elizah Nere, Frank Luwai – all from Enga – and Divinal Marus, from East Sepik, were arrested on June 23 following a confrontation with police and security officers at the UPNG’s main campus in Waigani, Port Moresby.
Magistrate Cosmas Bidar said there was not  enough evidence.
“One of the defendants was a genuine customer of the hire car,” Bidar said.
It was alleged that Kisa, Nere, Luwai and Marus were driving around in a silver Toyota Camry with registration number  SAC 625, which belonged to Minihi Motors.
The defendants were allegedly driving around in that vehicle at the UPNG  campus on June 24, the day after the burning of four university vehicles during a students’ protest.
The court found that the vehicle was hired and was not unlawfully used.
Bidar ordered the matter to be dismissed and the four be refunded their bail money.
Kisa, later told The National that he was responsible for hiring the vehicle and gave credit to his lawyer, Laken Aigilo, for offering free legal service.
