CANOE racing has always been part of independence celebrations in the nation’s capital and this year the Port Moresby Canoe Racing Association plans to have a bigger and better event to coincide with the 42nd anniversary.
NCD Governor Powes Parkop and the PNG Chinese community last Friday announced their support for the event.
The Chinese community presented a cheque for K30,000 to the Port Moresby Canoe Racing Association.
“On my part as the governor, I am happy and I want to thank the Chinese community in our capital city for their support. They have been part of our history, part of our development and will be part of our future,” Parkop said.
“It is a great honour to have the governor here to do the formalities of the presentation.”
Speaking on behalf of the Chinese sponsors, Wilson Xue said they were delighted to be part of the canoe racing for the first time.
“We are very happy to be part of the Independence celebrations. This sponsorship is to maintain the close ties PNG has with China and is initiated by the NCD governor,” Xue said.
President of the Port Moresby Canoe Racing Association Kila Gulo Vai said the canoe racing was a premier event of the Independence celebrations since 1975.
“To all our racing community in NCD and Central province, please bring your canoes along.
“The racing association has 150 canoes registered and in the remaining days leading up to Independence, we will finalise the canoes that will be taking part,” Vai said.
Making an appearance during the presentation was the defending champion of the canoe race in 2016, Wanimix.
