THE Fifa Under-20 Women’s World Cup local organising committee and the Papua New Guinea Football Association are appealing for local corporate support for the Nov 13-Dec 3 event.
PNGFA president David Chung, pictured, made the appeal while welcoming Telikom PNG’s K1.5 million contribution yesterday as the second local sponsor joining Air Niugini in helping deliver the world tournament.
Chung said he was pleased to see some of the countries leading firms partnering with Fifa.
The 54-year-old, who holds the dual role as Oceania Football Confederation president as well, said the event had six slots for local corporate sponsors and two had been filled so far.
With 47 days to go before kick-off, national sponsors will be needed to help prop up the LOC as had been done at last year’s Pacific Games.
“We are hoping more corporate support will be forthcoming to take up the remaining four positions because help from the host nation is always needed to stage a major event such as a world cup. This will also be an opportunity to promote their national brands on a global stage,” Chung said.
Chung said the U20 World Cup would bring over 175 million global viewers and would showcase the country as a sports and tourist destination.
He said the U20 World Cup would strengthen the positive image of PNG as a developing nation on the road to a bright future.
He urged the football fans and sports lovers to celebrate the festival of women’s football by attending matches and filling up the stadiums to show the world PNG loved and appreciated the “world game”.
