City eyes positive Apec outcome

THE National Capital District is ready for the 2018 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) meetings, the first of which is planned for November this year, Governor Powes Parkop says.
Parkop told The National that the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) would help police to ensure a high level of security, keep the city clean and seal city roads.
He said Port Moresby played host to a lot of events.
“Port Moresby has played host to a lot of major events and conferences and they have all been successful,” Parkop said.
“So let’s take advantage of this opportunity and make it good for our people and our country.
“The idea of having Apec here is for us to use the opportunity to promote our plan to build a sustainable economy to attract investors to come to our city and our country.”
Parkop said part of National Capital District Commission’s job was to give a positive impression of Papua New Guinea, the people and the potential for investment.
“We cannot do that alone in terms of security,” Parkop said.
“It will depend on the security forces but in terms of everything else, roads and cleanliness of the city we are going to do our part.
“I expect people to play their role.”
He stressed the need to keep  Port Moresby clean.
“One of the things that people can do is to stop spitting betel nut here and there,” he said. “Stop spitting betel nut.
“That’s the simple thing that
you all can do to contribute to a positive image to our city and our country.”
“It will attract investors to come and invest in the country,” he said.
“When it does it will benefit even those people who are spitting and their children so they have to understand and have a bigger picture.”
