Clerk firm on MPs’ behaviour in Parliament

Parliament will not tolerate “unparliamentary behaviour” of first-time MPs, Acting Clerk to Parliament Kala Aufa says.
He was commenting on the behaviour of North Fly MP, James Donald, in the first meeting on Wednesday even before MPs were sworn in.
Donald continuously shouted and pointed fingers at senior members of the Peter O’Neill faction.
His behaviour disappointed many people in the public gallery.
Aufa said Donald was a new MP who had not been told how to behave in Parliament.
“They haven’t been inducted yet so they don’t know their code of conduct,” he said.
“Once the Speaker takes them through their induction programme, where they will learn parliamentary etiquette and procedures, then they will know their boundaries.”
