Coaches learn much from trip

TWO national coaches have gained a lot from the recent high performance leadership summit on the Gold Coast, Australia.
National beach volleyball coach Alex Gima and table tennis coach Rea Loi both shared their experiences on the summit as they highlighted one area of coaching which required further consideration in their respective federations as other sports as well.
“Coaching in any sport always requires focus on the aspects of coaching athletes to become quality and professional performers but the aspect of coaching athletes to become a coach in the future does not really come into picture in many cases,” Gima said.
During the summit Gima identified the importance of coaching athletes to become future coaches as well rather than coaching them to become athletes from the local level to the international scenes.
“Some athletes have potential to become coaches in the future and if we (coaches) nurture them properly they will be equipped with the necessary skills to become even better coaches,” he said.
Gima said a former athlete who eventually becomes a coach in his or her category is an asset.
Loi echoed Gima’s sentiments saying the summit had equipped him with lot of knowledge on how to promote table tennis in the country.
“I would say this summit has taught me a lot in terms of being a coach and I am now ready to use the skills which I have learned and apply them in my sport,” Loi said.
