Common roll papers for SHP safe

THE common roll update materials for Southern Highlands that have been reported missing are stored in a safe place, outgoing election manager David Wakias says.
Wakias told The National yesterday that the materials were safe and he was waiting for the court’s decision tomorrow.
“If the court rules in favour of new election manager Jacob Kurap, then I will hand over the materials to him so that he continues with the common roll update,” he said.
“If the court rules in favour of me, I will start to distribute the materials to the returning officers and assistant returning officers for the immediate roll update exercise.”
Wakias said a statement by Southern Highlands’ administrator Joe Kaiyo that the materials were removed from a container and destroyed was incorrect.
“Nothing has been destroyed and I was cleaning the container,” he said. “I burnt old ballot papers and other papers. The materials are in batch and it has not been tampered (with) nor serial numbers removed.”
Kaiyo, who is also chairman of the provincial election steering committee, said the committee only found out about the missing materials when the container used to store the materials was opened in police presence.
