THE PNG-Australia Transport Sector Support Programme has delivered new road safety signs to 15 local contractors in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville during a road safety workshop in Buka on Tuesday.
The Australian government helps to improve road safety through the programme and one of the ways in doing so is by showing their support to Bougainville.
The programme is assisting to maintain roads and keep the communities and businesses in Bougainville connected.
The autonomous region’s Secretary for Department of Technical Services, Bernard Tzilu, remarked on the importance and value of Australia’s support at the presentation.
“We are working towards a safer, more reliable road network for Bougainville,” he said.
“This workshop and the distribution of safety signs is an important step forward for our local contractors and the travelling public.”
Tzilu also highlighted the importance of improving safety at road work sites. He said that it was critical step towards creating safer roads.
“Collisions and accidents are three times more likely to happen at road work sites, he said.
“This puts workers, motorists, and pedestrians at risk. By improving traffic management, we are making the roads safer for all.”
The new signs and traffic management plans will be used where roads are being graded or culverts are being replaced.
Contractors who attended the workshop expressed their thanks towards the programme for the new safety equipment and the training in traffic management.
The new signs will be placed on the road sides over the coming weeks.
