Curfew set to fix homebrew problems

Northern police, in consultation with the provincial authorities, have imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew targeting the producers and consumers of homebrew, locally known as eveka.
Provincial police commander Chief Inspector Lincoln Gerari told The National yesterday the curfew was to address ongoing law and order problems caused by homebrew consumption.
Gerari said the curfew, effective immediately, would be between 6am and 6pm and those
found in breach of it would be fined K1500.
“We are concentrating on addressing eveka because there have been reports of so many killings and other related social problems,” he said.
“There were many cases during the election period – four at Afore LLG, two in the Central Kaiva area and one in Popondetta recently.
He added that many people had been treated in hospital for knife wounds and other injuries caused in fights related to the consumption of homebrew.
He said police were imposing the curfew to address those issues. Other community members would not be affected.
He added that the operation was also a lead-up to the Independence Day celebrations in September and the festive period.
Police have already mapped out the hotspots for the production of homebrew and will be targeting those areas, Gerari said.
He said people within those areas have also been warned about the curfew.
