Lae’s Balob Teachers College and the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Programme have renewed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
The main purpose of yesterday’s agreement was to continue training students from the Yus LLG area in Kabwum.
College principal Jerry Hendingao said this was the second time the MoU was signed by the two parties.
Hendingao told representatives of the programme that many students they sponsored had displayed quality leadership.
“We have teachers who graduated under this programme teaching in remote parts of the Yus LLG area telling us that their services to their people were
effective not only academically but also in preaching the good news in the Bible,” Hendingao said.
He said through the partnership, some leaders of the province and country were unearthed.
Gibson Gala, the programme’s education and leadership officer, said the first batch of teachers under the partnership graduated in 2004.
“From then up till now, 33 teachers have passed out of this scholarship programme and currently, seven of them are teaching in the Yus LLG area.”
Gala said students on the scholarship had to sign a contract stating that their first three
years of teaching would be at
any of the 16 primary schools in Yus.
He said this would help address the teacher shortage in the area because many teachers do not want to go to remote schools.
