Deaths mar Independence celebrations in Northern


TWO men died in separate incidents in Northern last weekend, police say.
Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector Lincoln Gerari told The National that one was killed at Soroputa village in Middle Kaiva when a fight broke out between a group of men drinking homebrew.
One was also injured and admitted at the hospital. Two men are in police custody in Popondetta.
Sohe MP Delilah Gore was reportedly involved in the peace process. The incident developed into a row between the Soputa and Awala villagers.
The second incident took place at sea when a 12-year-old boy fell off the dinghy and had one of his legs badly severed by the motor.
Gerari said the boy and his family were travelling from Popondetta to Manau last Thursday to spend the Independence weekend.
Meanwhile, Independence celebrations in Northern was led by the Ijivitari district at the Independence oval.
Sohe district celebrations were held at Sasembata village last Sunday. It was planned for last Saturday but deferred because of the road blocks after the incident at Soroputa.
