Dept settles K2.26m Tesas fees, says Marus

THE Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) has paid the outstanding Tertiary Education Study Assistance Scheme (Tesas) component of the school fees for the University of PNG’s 2016 academic year.
Higher Education Minister Francis Marus confirmed that the department released K2.26 million to the university for the outstanding fees.
He said the Government would continue to support tertiary students through the Tesas scholarship and that stakeholders must appreciate that the Government is heavily committed to the quality of higher education.
Director-general of DHERST Prof David Kavanamur said they had been working closely with the Treasury Department and paid the outstanding fees so students and their families should not worry about it.
However, Kavanamur said for those students who had already paid their share of the outstanding Tesas component was a matter for the university to address and not DHERST.
“Those who had overpayments in the account and were charged for the outstanding Tesas component of the school fees is a matter for the university to discuss,” he said.
The UPNG management could not be reached for comment yesterday.
