MORE than 40 bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (MBBS 5) final-year students at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) recited the doctors Hippocratic Oath on Saturday.
This was done during MBBS 5 Ball, which was the 50th batch since the MBBS programme’s inception.
The Hippocratic Oath is a professional promise by doctors to have an honourable conduct with the knowledge they have attained according to SMHS executive officer Philip Modudula.
The recital was also hosted as a corporate dinner for raising funds which would go towards purchasing equipment needed at Port Moresby General Hospital, according to MBBS 5 student leader Ian Umo.
Umo told The National that the fundraising drive was a progressive effort of MBBS 5 students since 2013.
The corporate dinner fundraising and the Hippocratic Oath Ball was the pinnacle of their collective efforts.
“Since we came to medical faculty from Waigani campus, we all have been doing our part to support the MBBS fundraising drive as well as for our Hippocratic Oath Ball,” he said.
“I want to say that I am truly appreciative of all those efforts of my fellow students in this fundraising drive throughout our years but also in their own studies that have us here tonight reciting the Hippocratic Oath in front of our parents, family and others that supported us along the way.
“The equipment purchased by the funds we all raised is a token of our appreciation to the hospital for allowing us to learn through its facilities to become doctors.”
