Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato says he has not received any resignation letter from the Election Advisory Committee (EAC).
Gamato told a press conference in Port Moresby yesterday that there were questions being raised about the committee as it was an important issue and the commission regretted the committee’s decision.
“This was an initiative which we hoped would be helpful, but we regret the EAC’s decision,” he said.
“I welcome the comments that they had no serious disagreements with the commission or with me, I had no quarrel with them.”
The three-member committee quit early this week because it was not been able to get baseline data, information and a regular reports from the electoral commission.
Richard Kassman, representing Transparency International, Prof John Luluaki, representing the Electoral Commission, and Richard Pagen, representing the Ombudsman Commission, announced their resignation “to protect the integrity of the committee’’.
He said the Office of the Governor-General had not received any official advice on the resignation.
“I would like to point out that I have not yet received written resignations from the two members (Kassman and Luluaki) who held the press conference the other day,” Gamato said.
