Elimination stage costs Gore dearly

INDEPENDENT candidate Henry Johns Amuli yesterday unseated Delilah Gore, the only female cabinet minister in the current government, to win Northern’s Sohe seat.
Gore, who was only 166 votes off the absolute majority of 7690, watched her chances slip when they had to go to the elimination stage. She remained on 7524 while Amuli soared past her to 7713.
She could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Gore holds the Community Development, Youth and Religion Ministry portfolio. Amuli, who had been vying for the Sohe seat in the past three general elections, thanked voters for finally giving him the opportunity to represent them.
“I thank all polling officials and security personnel,” Amuli said.
“It’s not an easy path being the leader in an electorate but God will see us through in the next five years.”
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Ijivitari, National Alliance party candidate Richard Masere was declared the winner yesterday. Masere told the people he would stand together with Governor Gary Juffa to fight corruption.
“I congratulate Juffa and assure him that I am ready to work with him to move the province forward,” he said.
Masere won by an absolute majority 15,245.
Second was United Party’s John Warison on 7183.
Masere said the win demonstrated the desire for change in leadership.
