Employment and skills

Letters

IT was strange to read an article in your newspaper (The National, Aug 11) by Deloitte Touche about skills shortage being an obstacle to employment growth in Papua New Guinea.
As an expatriate in this country I find it ridiculous, especially if the retail and hospitality industry are finding it hard to grow due to skills shortage.
No one is born with skills, skills are acquired over a period of time.
Papua New Guinea nationals are generally friendly people by nature and love to learn and are excited to have new beginnings and are quite smart to catch up.
It’s a shame to see every morning at the forensic office a long line of young boys and girls trying to get a police clearance certificate for a job application.
