ENGA has set up a committee to deal with the impacts of climate change at provincial level because the people mostly affected live in villages.
Provincial administrator Dr Samson Amean said the committee was very important.
“We must be able to establish focal points to deal with climate change at the provincial level because the most vulnerable people who will feel the impacts of climate change live in the villages and in their little hamlets,” he said.
Amena said any programmes to address climate change must be felt at the district and local government levels.
“This is going to be one of the paramount programmes that we will push. Because if we prepare ourselves properly, disasters will be less costly on the lives of our people,” he said.
“But if we are not prepared, the impacts will be catastrophic and costly.
“We must be able to have the capacity to deal with these unpredictable events at the national, provincial, districts and local levels.”
He said the provincial administration had already started work by drilling wells through a partnership with the International Organisation for Migration.
“We have already started drilling water wells in disaster prone areas through partnership with IOM and they are already digging wells in five locations around the province,” he said.
