Family home torched


A FAMILY is is now homeless after their home was burnt down and destroyed their crops were destroyed following the death of man at Unum village outside Madang.
Imakul Bann said some village youths had attacked his home last week. His relatives then killed a man believed to be the faction’s ring leader.
Bann said the villagers were about to bury the man when he brought police in to stop the burial. They took the body to the Modilon Hospital morgue.
They took the body back to the village last weekend for a proper burial. The relatives of the man later burnt down Bann’s house and properties.
“They even cut down all my crops including betel nut trees near Gogol River,” Bann said.
Bann is an inland fish farmer and a leader for the Amele people in the Ambenob Local Level Government in Madang.
Madang police station commander Senior Inspector Jacob Bando said police officers from the rural command unit were supposed to attend to the ethnic clash.
A source from the rural command said they did not have a vehicle to attend to the matter.
He called on Madang MP Nixon Duban and Governor Jim Kas to put back the mobile squad in the area to monitor law and order.
He said polce presence in the area will help restore law and order.
