Festival organisers praised

THE Motu Koita people can have an identity in celebrating their indigenous Hiri Moale Festival, Moresby North West MP Michael Malabag says.
The Health minister commended organisers of the festival, the Motu Koita Assembly, for marking their own dates to be different from the annual independence anniversary celebrations.
“The change in calendar signifies the real truth about the festival,” Malabag said.
“The indigenous people now have a date to celebrate their own occasion.”
Malabag said since 2012, he had been supporting the festival with K30,000 each year. But this year he had gone further by chipping in K50,000.
“I have decided to chip in a larger amount this time because of the significance of this year’s festival given that it does not tie in with the independence celebrations,” Malabag said.
Malabag called on the National Capital District Commission, a major sponsor of the event, to invest more into the festival.
“The annual funding of K500,000 by National Capital District Commission is peanuts compared with how much they make in a year.”
Malabag called on businesses to support the festival on Sept 30 and Oct 1.
