THE Fifa local organising committee for this year’s Under-20 Women’s World Cup are working around the clock to ensure PNG is ready to welcome the world.
LOC chief executive officer Seamus Marten said with only a short time to go until kick off, his committee wanted to ensure everything was in place before the teams arrive.
He commended the two state-owned entities, Air Niugini and Telikom PNG, for partnering the LOC as national supporters.
“It’s great to see PNG businesses getting behind this global event to showcase their products and services. Both Telikom PNG and Air Niugini have made the commitment and we would love to see a full complement of six national supporters helping to deliver the tournament,” marten said.
He will address the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce breakfast tomorrow and invite the business community to be part of the women’s World Cup.
He said Fifa had contracted the accommodation providers directly and the participating teams had already had the opportunity to inspect the various hotels during the team workshop last month. He confirmed that accommodation for all teams have been secured, however this was sensitive information and for security reasons, the LOC would not divulge information on which hotels the teams would be staying in.
Seamus said the Royal Papua New Guinea Police Constabulary was the lead agency in security matters for the tournament, working in collaboration with a number of other local stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of all participants.
At a recent press conference, Police Commissioner Gari Baki announced that more than 300 police personnel would be engaged with the Fifa LOC to provide security for the visiting teams.
The majority of these police personnel would be policewomen.
Close circuit television (CCTV) will be installed around Jackson International Airport as part of security measures.
Countries coming for the Fifa World Cup are Brazil, Republic of Korea, North Korea, Sweden Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Ghana, USA, Germany Mexico, Venezuela Nigeria and France
The event will take place in Port Moresby from Nov 13 to Dec 3.
