FIRE razed a dormitory at a secondary school in the Markham valley of Morobe early on Sunday, officials say.
Provincial education committee chairman Andrew Gena confirmed that the dormitory was occupied by girls who had left for church.
“Dormitory number two caught fire around 10am, when all the occupants were outside. Some students attended church while others were doing studies when the fire started,” he said.
He said the cause of the fire was yet to be determined.
But it is believed that the fire may have started from an electric fault.
Gena told The National that students attempted to put out the fire to save the dormitory but their efforts were in vain.
“I received reports from the school that the fire spread from dorm two to another dormitory. But the students and community members managed to put it out.” he said.
