SEVEN suspects were arrested and charged for arson and willful damage following the burning down of the newly-built Gagidu police station in Finschafen, Morobe, last week.
Rural coordinator for police in Morobe Chief Inspector David Warap confirmed that the seven suspects were brought into Lae from Finschafen last Sunday to be charged.
“The suspects are all from different areas of Finschafen and they allegedly burnt down the incomplete police station several hours after the new member-elect, Renbo Paita, was declared.”
Warap described the burning down of the police station as an awful loss and a barrier to development in the district.
“Our police commander has appealed through the media if the member-elect could take ownership and to build a new police station. The responsibility lies with him, however, it would be costly to build such a police station again,” he said.
Warap told The National that Finschafen needed a police station to address law and order issues in the district.
