The first group of students who have completed the new Bachelor of Public Finance and Accountancy programme at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) graduated on Friday.
They included 20 district treasurers who have undergone two years of full-time study. They completed the programme successfully in 2016 and returned to their respective provinces.
The new degree programme was launched in 2015 at the request of the Department of Finance to enhance finance managers’ academic and professional qualifications.
Finance officers within the public sector agencies who hold a diploma in accounting and have five years of work experience are eligible to enrol in this programme.
The School of Business and Public Policy at University of Papua New Guinea and the Department of Finance jointly enrol 30 students annually.
Currently, two groups of students are enrolled in this degree programme and undergraduates who have been accepted are fully sponsored by the department.
This programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy in the United Kingdom, which is an internationally recognised institution.
