THE Western Flyers from Daru Island say they participated in the Southern Region Rugby League nines tournament to gain experience in the game.
Winning was not their priority but to expose, promote and develop the village youths from Daru and create a pathway for their development programme in their district and province.
The Flyers won one and lost two games and missed out on the playoffs in the regional nines tournament that will end with finals today at the National Football Stadium. Western Flyers rugby league development chairman Okopela Kaiyawa said their participation was to bring the youths out to experience the competitiveness and level of football outside.
“We came here to really taste it and we experienced that and it is good for us,” Kaiyawa said.
“The majority of our boys are youths and students who believe that rugby league will help develop them to be good citizens in whatever they do in their walks of life in future.
“These youths have a long way to go but this kind of regular competitions and tournaments in future will really develop them to be better players in the years to come.
“These were untapped hidden talents brought all the way from Western to give them that golden opportunity to play against some of the best teams in Port Moresby.”
Kaiyawa said sees a promising future. He said all stakeholders should be serious about promoting and developing.
