Former MP appears in court

FORMER Maprik MP Gabriel Kapris appeared in the Waigani Committal Court yesterday charged with conspiracy, false pretence and two counts each of abuse of office and misappropriation.
Between March and June 2012, Kapris, 53, from Supari village in Maprik, East Sepik, was alleged to have conspired with Ecohub Construction Ltd (ECL) to fraudulently convert the use of six earth-moving machines worth more than K3 million, belonging to the Maprik district administration, to ECL.
It was alleged that Kapris directed K400,000 to be paid to ECL and administered by the administrator.
Magistrate John Kaumi said it was a new matter in court and he would give time for the arresting officers to complete investigations.
Police allege that on different dates between March and June 2012, Kapris, in his capacity as the MP, conspired with district administrator Robin Diyndiwi and his (Kapris’) brother in-law and director for ECL Basifen Joshua to steal six new earth-moving machines owned by the district administration. The machines were worth K3,519,998.
The machines were recovered by police on June 6, 2014, after they were allegedly hidden by Kapris and his accomplices at the Fatambo village in Ambunti-Drekirkir in 2011.
Kaumi read the charges to Kapris and ordered the matter to return to court on Dec 6.
Kapris K1000 bail was extended.
