Forum to discuss ways of using resources to generate energy

A TWO-day forum focusing on “green energy” begins today in Port Moresby to discuss ways to use environmentally-friendly resources to generate energy.
Department of National Planning and Monitoring Secretary Hakaua Harry said the country would learn from the Asian Development Bank Institute on how to use its “green” resources to generate energy.
The forum is titled Green Infrastructure and Poverty Reduction in the Pacific island countries.
The theme is “Driving green infrastructure to improve livelihoods in the Pacific”.
“The forum is basically about driving green infrastructure to improve livelihood in the Pacific. Is a very important agenda,” Harry said.
“We are bringing together Pacific island countries to Papua New Guinea.
“And we are inviting Australia, New Zealand, Timor Leste and Indonesia to be part of the forum.
Experts from ADBI are going to provide us with information in terms of how we can all come together to talk about green infrastructure and poverty reduction in the Pacific.”
Harry said the region was prone to the impact of climate change.
“Climate change is one of the agendas that all of us are talking about. But for Pacific Island countries, we have the ocean that is around us that is huge,” she said.
“The ocean has the potential, but the ocean is also contributing to climate change. And we need to talk about the kind of infrastructure designed in a way that is disaster-resilient.
“In PNG, we have progress work towards looking at infrastructure, looking at situations where we can work with the way the environment is changing, how our climate is impacting on us.”
