Four held over girl’s death

FOUR men are in custody over the alleged murder of an 18-year-old girl in Sangara, Northern province, Popondetta police have reported.
Provincial police commander Chief Insp Lincoln Gerari told The National that the incident happened on Friday evening involving the girl who was a Grade 8 student at Sangara Primary School.
Gerari said the girl and her boyfriend had gone into a nearby oil palm block where they were drinking when four men approached them, chased the boy away and murdered the girl.
He said the girl from Ongoho village in Sohe District had multiple stab wounds to her body and may have died due to loss of blood.
Gerari said her body was discovered on Saturday morning and reported to the police.
“We have not charged the four men, the post-mortem is yet to be carried out which will determine the charges.
“Our officers arrested the four men on Saturday morning and they are now in the Popondetta police station cell.
“It was one of the worst murder cases we’ve had, especially involving a young girl and this should serve as a warning to others,” Gerari said.
He said the post-mortem was expected to be carried out this week which would determine the cause of the death.
“There is a possibility that the girl was raped too but all this would be determined by the post-mortem.
“Young girls of vulnerable age should take precautions when they are out there and parents must ensure their daughters are safe and at home,” Gerari said.
Meanwhile, he said this and other major criminal cases would be properly investigated to ensure that perpetrators faced the full brunt of the law.
While responding to the lack of conviction of major crimes in the province, Gerari said he would make sure that the investigations were properly supervised until cases were completed.
