Fraud squad officers’ actions not authorised: Police

Papua

TWO fraud squad officers investigating public servants in Northern have not been sanctioned by the Southern Command, Assistant Commissioner of Police Southern Command Allan Kundi says.
Kundi told The National that officers Manson Tutune and Tony Sevese were in Popondetta for the national court sitting which has now been adjourned to next year.
Responding to questions on the two officers currently in Popondetta carrying out investigations on the Ijivitari district development authority, Kundi said: “My office and the regional command is not aware of this operation.
“Such investigations should be sanctioned by my office. As far as we are concerned, we have not authorised them to carry out the investigations.
“They were there for the National court sitting. They were supposed to have returned to Port Moresby.”
According to reports from Popondetta, the fraud squad officers (named), had been carrying out investigations in Popondetta, mainly of public servants from the Ijivitari and Sohe district offices and had arrested some of them.
It is understood that these two officers were looking for accommodation and allowances from the Sohe and Ijivitari district administrations and treasury offices.
Although there is a fraud office in Popondetta, it is not clear who had given approval for the two officers to carry out the investigations.
Kundi said both officers have been for the last year or so carrying out investigations in Popondetta which had led to the arrest of some senior public servants in the Oro administration.
He said that was the reason why they were following the national court sitting because of those cases.
“All we know is that since the national court had been adjourned, they were to return to Port Moresby.
“Neither my office, the regional command nor the ACP Crimes is aware of the investigations that both officers are carrying out in Popondetta,” Kundi said.
Northern police commander Chief Inspector Lincoln Gerari said he was aware of the investigations but would give a report later as he was out on another operation along the North Coast area.
