Gier sure of fine German finish

GERMANY’s player-of-the-match in their 3-1 victory over Venezuela, Madeline Gier, is positive they can go all the way to the final.
Gier said that teamwork was a vital part of their win and if they reproduced similar efforts throughout the tournament they would be able to not only top their group (D) but progress far into the next stage.
“I am very proud we won our first game. We demonstrated good teamwork against Venezuela and I am positive about our second game (against Mexico) but I know it is going to be difficult,” Gier said.
The reigning champions will face a strong Mexican side tomorrow.
The Mexicans were superb in their defensive effort against South Korea, which saw them win 2-0 and the Germans are wary of the Central Americans.
Gier said her side and their opponents had momentum heading into the clash and it would be a challenge to break a confident Mexican defence.
The 20-year-old, who scored two goals against Venezuela, said she took every game seriously and that helped her to stay focused.
The Mexican backline consisting of Jaqueline Rodriguez, Rebeca Bernal and Monica Flores proved themselves up to the task against a good South Korea side on Monday night with coach Roberto Medina admitting they would have to be at their very best against the Germans.
“We will have to be at our best against Germany,” Medina said.
“It is going to be an important game.”
