THE Government has given K1 million to the University of Technology in Lae to assist in the resumption of classes for the 2016 academic year.
Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Francis Marus handed over the funds to Vice-Chancellor Albert Schram, and also toured the campus to view some of the damaged buildings.
Classes begin on Monday.
“The money will assist the university’s administration to repair student dormitories and other facilities before students arrive,” he said.
“I understand that a lot of effort by the Unitech administration and staff have been put into planning and other areas to ensure that teaching and learning activities resume swiftly.”
Marus said the Government had allocated K63 million to assist the three State universities affected by the student boycott in May and June.
Students began arriving at the Taraka campus yesterday. Classes had been suspended following weeks of protests and violence on campus in which a student died.
The 120 female students who arrived yesterday were allocated rooms while others lined up beside the Students Services Office.
Male students will be allocated rooms today with 363 rooms for first and second year students being repaired.
Deputy Registrar Henry Gioven said students would be signing two forms to confirm their return to classes and their room allocation.
