ARCHBISHOP Kurian Vayalunkal says diplomatic relations established 39 years ago between the Holy See and PNG had contributed to increasing mutual respect and admiration.
He presented his letter of credence to Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio in Port Moresby yesterday. Pope Francis had appointed Vayalunkal as the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to PNG.
“Without having abandoned its mission to provide the logistics for the activity of the Catholic Church in the individual states, the Holy See through its diplomatic missions is today much concerned with human rights and fundamental personal freedoms,” Vayalunkal said.
“The Holy See strives to promote justice and peace for all.
“In its politics and international relations, it gives priority to personalism because according to the Christian doctrine, the individual person has priority over a group of persons.”
Vayalunkal said the Catholic Church in PNG was committed to protecting the rich nature of the nation which was a  blessing from God.
Sir Michael told Vayalunkal that the country looked forward to enhancing and furthering bilateral relations between PNG and the Holy See.
He acknowledged the dedication and commitment of the Catholic Church in providing social services, health care, education, and moral and spiritual enrichments to the people of PNG.
