THE Sir Joseph Nombri Memorial General Hospital in Kundiawa, Chimbu will become a referral centre for the highlands region, according to chief executive officer Dr Harry Poka.
Michael Malabag, the Health and HIV-AIDS Minister, is expected to make the formal announcement when he visits Kundiawa this week.
The hospital was rated for some time as a five-star hospital and attended to patients from the region and other parts of the country. Poka said it had placed a lot of pressure on the staff and hospital supplies.
Poka said the hospital had been upgraded to level six and they could now handle the increase in patients.
“The other level six hospitals are in Mt Hagen, Goroka, Angau in Lae and the Nonga Base Hospital in Rabaul,” he said.
“The hospital will also become the cancer treatment centre for the highlands region.”
The hospital board has decided to buy an MRI and a CT scan machines.
Hospital board chairman Fr Simon Kewande said since 2013, K11 million was spent to complete 22 projects aimed at providing improved and quality health care and accommodation.
