Immigration dept official says diplomatic relations vital

PEOPLE to people links are an important part of the relationship between countries, Foreign Affairs and Immigration acting deputy secretary (policy) John Yamin says.
Yamin said during the first South Korea and PNG dialogue forum last week that such relationship enabled people of both countries to understand each other and appreciate the differences in culture to maintain a good relationship.
He said it was important that both countries had in place instruments that facilitated and promoted people connections in the key areas of air services, visa arrangements, tourism packages, cultural products and business or commercial incentives.
The Department of Prime Minister and National Executive Council, deputy Secretary Frank Aisi said PNG needed a foreign policy that was effective and could draw tangible developments that complemented national development plans.
Aisi said the policy was being reviewed and would be delivered by a functional public service that was effective and attuned to daily domestic and international issues.
“Systems and procedures within the public service need to be reviewed, strengthened, managed and operated by skilled, qualified and committed civil servants.”
