WORK to repair damaged roads and bridges in Morobe following the recent flooding will cost K5 million, Governor Kelly Naru says.
Naru yesterday gave an update on the extent of damage caused to infrastructures in the province following the recent heavy rain.
He said the cost covered damages to roads, bridges and drains.
Naru said bridges had been washed away in Lae, Finschhafen, Bulolo and Nawaeb.
“In terms of infrastructure damage alone, the cost is in the millions,” Naru said.
“For infrastructure, we will need in the vicinity of K5 million to rebuild all the roads, bridges and put the culverts back. In total, we would require K9.3 million. This disaster has caught us off-guard.”
He said many of the roads and bridges had been affected. “For instance, the Nawaeb district had its access road to Boana Station cut off after the Busu River flooded and washed away the Busu Bridge,” Naru said.
He said at the border of Tewai-Siassi and Finschhafen in the Kote local level government, seven bridges were damaged.
“Our people are moving around in difficult circumstances,” Naru said.
