THE Eastern Papua Institute of Agriculture and Technology in Popondetta will receive K4 million for its infrastructure development and the start of the new school year.
Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology Francis Marus told The National that the Eastern Papua Institute was among the first for the Government to pilot in partnering the provincial government to manage and sustain.
“We decided to partner the provincial government so that they can assist in terms of sustaining the management of it,” he said.
“That was the first one that we decided to pilot to see how best the sector can in terms of partnering provincial governments and together manage the organisations. Therefore, we came up with this arrangement and the transition was this year,” Marus said.
He said the institution decided that this year would be the transitional period and so the University of Natural Resources and Environment at Vudal released the Eastern Papua Institute of Agriculture to be on its own.
This year is the transition period and the department will use the same process of selection of students for the institution next year.
This year the selection committee will select 20-plus students to start with the institute next year.
“The government’s plan is to try as much as possible to activate all its institutions and that is an institution which needs funding,” Marus said.
“We have a few more days before the closure of accounts and my responsibility now is to see that the campus gets its K1 million that is due. Previously, it was parked under UNRE and it was very cumbersome so I gave orders for the funds to be given back to the department.
“My department went and did an advance letter which is a normal process of retrieving the money back from UNRE.”
“Once they finish everything I’ll bring the money to the Eastern Papua Institute management and get them to organise over the Christmas break to try as much as possible and get the basic infrastructure ready so the students can resume classes.
“While they are learning, my department will organise the continued proper work on rehabilitating the institute.”
