Islands have new soccer champions

NEW Guinea Islands now have new Besta Cup champions in Central Bougainville (men’s) and Kokopo (women’s) following the regional qualification tournament held in Kimbe, West New Britain, over the
independence weekend.
Central Bougainville beat South Bougainville 2-1 to win their first regional soccer title.
Former champions Manus were dethroned on their way into the semifinals by South Bougainville.
In the women’s final, Kokopo beat Kumbango (NBPOL)2-1 to book their spot at the Besta Cup championships in Lae later this year.
The final was officially kicked off by West New Britain Governor Sasindran Muthuvel.
PNG Football Association competition manager Simon Koima said the NGI tournament brought the nationwide qualifiers to a close.
Major sponsors International Food Corporation (IFC) will inform PNGFA when the finals will be staged. Teams by regions: Mamose – Madang (men’s), Lahi (women’s); Southern – Koupa (men’s), NCDPSSA (women’s); New Guinea Islands – Central Bougainville (men’s), Kokopo (women’s); Highlands – Mt Hagen Central (men’s, women’s).
